North Gold Coast Seahawks are proud to announce the appointment of David Gurney as Head Coach of the NBL1 Men’s team for the 2026 season, marking an exciting new chapter in the club’s return to NBL1 competition.
A long-time Seahawk, David has been a cornerstone of the club’s basketball community for many years, both as a player and coach. His deep knowledge of the game, passion for athlete development, and commitment to strengthening team culture make him an ideal leader for the next phase of the Seahawks’ journey.
Over the last nine years, David has significantly impacted junior representative coaching, guiding emerging talent in the region. For the past four years, he has contributed to Queensland’s State Performance Program (SPP), playing a key role in elite junior development. His coaching career includes leading the Seahawks QSL Women’s team, where he fostered a culture of performance, accountability, and growth.
David’s involvement with Basketball Queensland’s ASPIRE Coaching Program has further refined his player-focused coaching philosophy. His experience as a player at the QBL, NBL, ABA, QSL, and NBL1 levels brings valuable insight into national-level competition and success.
“I’m incredibly excited to be part of the North Gold Coast Seahawks’ return to NBL1 as the Men’s Head Coach,” said Gurney. “It’s a great opportunity to represent our club and community at this level. My focus will be on building a strong, sustainable culture driven by effort, accountability, and pride in our local talent.”
This appointment aligns with the Seahawks’ strategic plan to re-enter NBL1 North in 2026, emphasizing the development of homegrown players and clear progression from junior to elite basketball.
North Gold Coast Seahawks General Manager Steve McLeod said the appointment reinforces the club’s commitment to sustainable, locally driven growth: “David has been part of the Seahawks family for many years, as a player, mentor, and leader. His track record developing talent and his understanding of what it means to represent the Seahawks make him the perfect fit to guide our men’s program into NBL1.”
The club will continue to build its NBL1 structure in the coming months, with trials, community engagement sessions, and partnership opportunities all planned before the 2026 season tip-off.
