OUR HISTORY

Our
Story
From humble beginnings within our local community, the North Gold Coast Seahawks has today grown to become one of this region’s leading sporting clubs. Established in 1996 at the Runaway Bay Indoor Sports Centre, the association now boasts more than 3009 registered members from its home base at the Coomera Indoor Sports Complex, located on Beattie Road. Seahawks continues to provide regular basketball programs from Under 8’s through to Masters divisions.
The association (originally the Runaway Bay Basketball Association or RBBA), founded by local basketball identity Greg Fox and a group of dedicated volunteers, grew a solid base of junior participation, supported by nearby primary schools. Key to this was developing vital relationships with several community stakeholders and business leaders, including the Gold Coast City Council.
In the early 2000’s, Seahawks rep teams featured in the Gold Coast junior domestic competition, winning multiple premierships in both girls and boys divisions. By 2005, after a sustained period of player and volunteer growth, the association formulated its own Club Challenge Competition. This weekly competition at Runaway Bay featured four foundation junior clubs - Coombabah Clippers, Helensvale Hurricanes, Labrador Wildcats and the Western Warriors.
Seahawks took a huge step forward in 2006 with its junior rep teams entering Basketball Queensland competitions, notably the BQJBC and State Classics. At the same time Seahawks senior rep teams joined the regional SBL competition having immediate success - winning multiple men’s and women’s titles. Credibility as an association on the rise was ensured as a new era of professionalism enveloped the club and its many supporters and sponsors. Kudos goes to the then association leadership that continued to promote its culture as the “family club”.
With the continued growth of the association, a generational relocation to the new eight court Coomera Indoor Sports Centre was successfully undertaken. The future looks bright as the association stays connected to the growth corridor through the north Gold Coast region.
